PN-01: Future Trends and Technologies for 6G Security

Scope

With the standardization and commercialization completed at an unforeseen pace for the 5G wireless networks, researchers, engineers and executives from the academia and industry are now exploring new technologies that can support 6G wireless networks. These emerging technologies bring 6G networks high-performance capacities yet pose different challenges to security at the same time. To secure the 6G network, the traditional external and passive security mechanism driven by security events and equal guarantee compliance cannot satisfy the needs of the business. A novel security architecture that enables 6G security systems to be self-sensing, self-adaptive, and self-growing is required. To achieve this goal, quantum communication, zero trust, artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML), and other emerging technologies can act as candidates to meet the security requirements
and ensure the reliability and functionality of the upcoming 6G system.

This panel brings together speakers from academia, industry and government agencies to exchange visions on the challenges and opportunities expected to be encountered in 6G networks and discuss novel security architecture, applications, and candidate technologies that will help secure 6G networks.

Bios 

Moderator:

Leyi Zhang (ZTE Corporation, China)

Leyi Zhang received the B.S. and M.S. degree (with honors) in electronic engineering from the Department of Electronic Information Engineering, Beihang University in 2020 and 2023 respectively. She is working as a researcher with the technology planning department of ZTE Corporation, responsible for long-term research as well as standardization. Her research interests include network security and quantum communication. She has many peer-reviewed publications. She took part in many international academic conferences as the session chair or invited speaker. She participated in national key research projects as the research assistant and researcher. She actively participates in global standardization activities through platforms such as ITU-T SG 17, 3GPP SA3, ETSI TC CYBER and CCSA.

Heung Youl Youm (Soonchunhyang University, Korea) 
Tentative topic of the talk: security for future networks: a standardization perspective
Heung Youl Youm is Chairman of ITU-T SG17 (Security). He is working as a professor for the Department of Information Security Engineering of the Soonchunhyang University, Korea from September 1990. He is currently the Director of SCH Cybersecurity Research Centre from Dec. 2013. He was a Commissioner for Personal Information Protection Commission from August 5, 2020 to August 4 2023. He has been a Project Editor for many approved ITU-T Recommendations or agreed Supplements in DLT security, authentication/application protocols, de-identification techniques, USN/IoT security, 5G security, and cybersecurity. 

Narinder Thandi (Technology Innovation Institute (TII), UAE)
Tentative topic of the talk: 6G within tactical operations
Narinder Thandi is the Director of Security at TII with 23 years of experience across UK and Europe Research institutions, with a partiulcar focus on Land and Air communication systems. Narinder Thandi has worked on numerous strategic and tactical programmes within C4ISR, Data Exploitation, and digital telecommunication systems. 

Ahmed Alkindi (Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, UAE)
Tentative topic of the talk: Zero Trust
Ahmed Alkindi, a seasoned technologist with over 23 years of experience in the information technology sector, presently serves as the Information Security Manager at the world-renowned Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, the pioneering institution dedicated to AI research and education. Throughout his career, Ahmed has held various information technology roles in both government and semi-government organizations and successfully managed key accounts for a regional IT service provider. His proactive approach to implementing cutting-edge technologies, such as cloud computing and IoT, has enabled businesses to undergo digital transformations while effectively managing cybersecurity risks. Ahmed embarked on his information security journey two decades ago, delivering impactful Information Security initiatives across multiple organizations, and holds an MBA from UAE University,  exemplifying his dedication to excellence in the IT and security fields.

Chan Yeob Yeun (Khalifa University, UAE)
Tentative topic of the talk: Emerging AI Techniques for CybersecurityChan Yeob Yeun (Senior Member, IEEE) received the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in information security from the Royal Holloway, University of London, in 1996 and 2000, respectively. After his Ph.D. degree, he joined Toshiba TRL, Bristol, U.K., and later became the Vice President at the Mobile Handset Research and Development Center, LG Electronics, Seoul, South Korea, in 2005. He was responsible for developing mobile TV technologies and related security. He left LG Electronics, in 2007, and joined KAIST, South Korea, until August 2008, and then the Khalifa University of Science and Technology, in September 2008. He is currently a researcher of cybersecurity, including the IoT/USN security, cyber-physical system security, cloud/fog security, and cryptographic techniques; an Associate Professor with the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science; and the Cybersecurity Leader of the Center for Cyber-Physical Systems (C2PS). He also enjoys lecturing for M.Sc. cyber security and Ph.D. engineering courses at Khalifa University. He has published more than 160 journal articles and conference papers, nine book chapters, and ten international patent applications. He also works on the editorial board of multiple international journals and on the steering committee of international conferences.

Bushra AlBlooshi (Dubai Electronic Security Center (DESC), UAE)
Tentative topic of the talk: Wireless Communication Security New Trends
Bushra AlBlooshi is CEO Senior Consultant at Dubai Electronic Security Center (DESC), leader of Dubai Cyber Innovation Park (dcipark), member in the world economic forum global future council, and chair of digital skills committee and Director of digital policies in Dubai digital authority. She leads many strategic initiatives in the city of Dubai such as Dubai Digital Skills Strategy, Dubai cybersecurity strategy, Dubai cybersecurity R&D agenda and Dubai digital policies. Bushra has more than 17 years of experience in digital transformation, cybersecurity and strategy management. She held different positions in different industries and organizations. AlBlooshi published and participated in many national and international conferences. Dr. Bushra is currently a member of several advisory boards and committees nationally and internationally. Dr.Bushra is the inventor of two patents in memory management and cloud security. She was recently awarded as the best executive in cybersecurity in Middle East by women in cyber security Middle East. She was also the lead author of a report published recently by the world economic forum in collaboration with international experts around the world.
